Things Not Strings
Also called: strings to things, things over strings, entities not strings
"Things, not strings" is Google's phrase for its 2012 shift, launched with the Knowledge Graph, from matching the literal keyword strings in a query to understanding the real-world entities behind it (people, places, brands, concepts) and how they relate to one another.
Why entities beat keywords
Before 2012, a query like “taj mahal” was two words to match against page text. Google’s Amit Singhal announced the Knowledge Graph on May 16, 2012, describing a database of real-world things and the links between them (over 500 million objects and 3.5 billion facts at launch). Now the engine can tell the monument in Agra from the blues musician, then surface the facts that fit whichever one you meant.
An entity is anything with a distinct identity: a brand, a person, a product, a place. Google recognizes them through named entity recognition, structured data (Schema.org types), and corroborating mentions across trusted sites. Each known entity gets a machine-readable ID, so “Apple the company” and “apple the fruit” never blur together. You reinforce your own entity with consistent naming and sameAs links pointing to your authoritative profiles.
This is the foundation under modern AI search. AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Gemini use the Knowledge Graph to identify and verify the entities in a query before writing an answer. If a machine cannot map your brand to a known thing, it has nothing to cite. “Things, not strings” is why keyword stuffing stopped working, and why entity clarity now decides whether you appear in an answer at all.
How it affects your traffic
If Google and AI engines cannot cleanly identify your brand as an entity, your pages compete on raw keywords and get skipped when answers are assembled from entities. Entity clarity (consistent naming, Organization schema, sameAs profiles, and corroborating mentions on trusted sites) is what earns a Knowledge Panel and citations inside AI Overviews and chat assistants. Our AI SEO work builds that entity foundation so machines map your brand to a real thing and pull it into answers, not just blue links.
