Topical map
Also called: topical mapping, topic map, content map
A topical map is a structured blueprint of every subtopic, entity, and question a site must cover to fully own a subject in search. It organizes content by how concepts relate to each other, not by isolated keywords, so search engines and AI assistants read the site as a complete source on the topic.
From keyword list to coverage plan
A keyword list tells you which phrases have volume. A topical map tells you the whole shape of a subject: the core entity at the center, the subtopics that branch off it, and the questions a real reader asks at each stage. The term comes out of semantic SEO work (Koray Tuğberk Gübür and Holistic SEO), where the map is the plan for a “semantic content network,” not a publishing calendar.
The structure is usually a hub and its spokes:
Pillar: "Email marketing"
├─ What is email marketing (definition)
├─ Building a list (cluster)
├─ Segmentation (cluster)
├─ Deliverability (cluster)
└─ Metrics & A/B testing (cluster)
Each node becomes a page, and pages link to each other along the relationships the map draws. Done well, that coverage is what Google’s own guidance rewards: content that gives “a substantial, complete, or comprehensive description of the topic” and leaves a reader feeling they learned enough to reach their goal.
A topical map is not the same as topical authority. The map is the plan. Authority is the ranking state you earn after you publish the pages and interlink them properly. Skipping the map is how sites end up with ten posts fighting for the same head term and nothing covering the long-tail questions around it.
How it affects your traffic
A topical map decides which pages you build and how they connect, so it sets the ceiling on how much of a subject you can rank for. Cover a topic in scattered one-off posts and you compete for a handful of head terms; map the full subject and interlink it, and you pick up the long-tail and question queries competitors miss, plus more citations in AI answers that pull from thorough sources. In our On-Page SEO work the map is where we start: we audit what you already cover, find the gaps, and turn them into a build order for titles, headings, and internal links. That turns a pile of keywords into a plan that compounds instead of cannibalizing itself.
