Pillar page

Also called: pillar content, cornerstone content

A pillar page is a broad hub page that covers a topic at a high level and links out to, and gets links back from, focused "cluster" pages on its subtopics. Popularized by HubSpot, it anchors a topic cluster whose internal linking signals to search and AI engines that your site covers a subject in depth.

How the pillar-and-cluster model works

A topic cluster has three parts: the pillar, the cluster pages, and the links tying them together. The pillar targets a broad head term (say, “email marketing”). Each cluster page goes deep on one subtopic (“subject lines,” “welcome sequences,” “list segmentation”) and links back up to the pillar with descriptive anchor text. The pillar links down to each cluster in return. That two-way linking is the real mechanism, not the word count. Google only follows a link if it is an <a> element with an href, and it reads the anchor text to understand what the destination page is about. A pillar with no real internal links is just a long article.

A pillar is broader but usually less deep than any single cluster page. Its job is coverage and navigation, so it can rank for the head term while funneling crawl attention and link equity to the cluster pages that convert. HubSpot popularized this hub-and-spoke structure as the fix for blog archives where posts compete for the same query.

The same shape helps with AI search. When ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google’s AI Overviews build an answer, a tight cluster shows your site treats a subject in depth instead of in scattered one-off posts, which makes individual passages easier to cite. Common failure modes: a pillar with no clusters yet, orphaned clusters that never link back, or identical anchor text everywhere.

How it affects your traffic

A well-built pillar page concentrates internal-link equity so your head-term hub and its long-tail cluster pages rank together instead of competing for the same query. That compounds: the more related pages you tie into one clean structure, the more searches you cover and the longer those positions tend to hold. Getting the on-page pieces right (headings, anchor text, the internal-link map, and the pillar's own optimization) is exactly what our On-Page SEO service handles, and it is where most cluster builds either take hold or quietly leak traffic.
