voice search

Also called: voice-based search, voice-activated search, spoken search

Voice search is when someone speaks a query aloud and a search engine or assistant (Google Assistant, Siri, Alexa) answers it, often by reading back a single result instead of showing a full page of links.

How a spoken query becomes an answer

Voice search runs a spoken question through speech recognition, turns it into text, then reads intent with natural language understanding. For many queries Google returns the same organic results you would see on a screen. For clear factual questions the assistant reads back one answer, usually lifted from the featured snippet at the top of the results.

That single-answer behavior changes the math. A typed search can earn clicks from positions 1 through 10. A spoken search often has room for one voice, so ranking second is close to invisible.

Spoken queries also sound different. People ask full questions in a natural voice (“what time does the pharmacy near me close?”) instead of clipped keywords (“pharmacy hours”). They skew local, long-tail, and immediate.

A couple of structural moves help you get read aloud. The speakable schema property marks the sentences best suited for text-to-speech, though Google still lists it as beta and limited to English content for US Google Home users. Question-based headings with a tight answer right underneath give an assistant a clean block to quote, and that same format is what wins the featured snippet a spoken answer is usually pulled from. Attribution is hard because a spoken answer often produces no click, so track proxies: featured-snippet wins, local-pack presence, and question-shaped queries in Search Console.

How it affects your traffic

Voice and AI assistants increasingly answer a question without sending a click, so the prize is owning the one result that gets spoken. Our AI SEO work structures your pages to be that source: snippet-ready answers, question-based headings, speakable markup, and consistent local data. The same structure is what AI Overviews and chat assistants pull from, so one build defends you across voice, AI search, and classic snippets. If your category attracts a lot of "near me" or how-to questions, this is where quiet traffic loss tends to hide.
