conversational search

Also called: conversational AI search, chat search, conversational information seeking

Conversational search is search conducted as a multi-turn dialogue: you ask a question in natural language, then refine it with follow-ups, and the system carries context from earlier turns instead of treating each query as fresh. Google AI Mode, ChatGPT search, and Perplexity all work this way.

The term predates today’s chatbots (academics called it conversational information seeking), but it went mainstream once AI answers took over the results page. Google AI Mode, ChatGPT search, Perplexity, and Copilot all run on it: you talk to search the way you would talk to a person.

How a session actually runs

Under the hood, Google does not answer your sentence directly. Per Google, “AI Mode uses our query fan-out technique, breaking down your question into subtopics and issuing a multitude of queries simultaneously on your behalf.” Each follow-up re-runs that fan-out with the earlier turns as context, so turn three inherits the intent from turns one and two.

A real session looks less like keywords and more like a conversation:

Turn 1: best noise-cancelling headphones under $300
Turn 2: which of those are best for a long flight?
Turn 3: and which have the longest battery life?

Google’s product lead has said people ask questions about twice as long as traditional search, and follow up roughly a quarter of the time. That changes the target. There is no single keyword to win; a topic gets covered across several turns, and your page has to stay citable at each one. Google’s line is blunt: there are “no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode.” Solid fundamentals still decide who gets pulled in.

How it affects your traffic

For your site, this means a page can be cited on turn three of someone's session without ever ranking first for a clean keyword, and it can be silently skipped if it only answers the opening question. Winning conversational search is less about one head term and more about covering a topic's follow-ups: the comparisons, constraints, and "which one for X" questions that come after the first ask. That is the core of AI SEO work, structuring content so an AI engine can lift and attribute it across a multi-turn thread rather than a single query.
