Bing Webmaster Tools

Also called: BWT, Bing Webmaster, Microsoft Bing Webmaster Tools

Bing Webmaster Tools (BWT) is Microsoft's free service for monitoring and improving how a site performs in Bing search. It is Bing's equivalent of Google Search Console, offering site verification, URL and sitemap submission, index and crawl reports, and search-performance data (clicks, impressions).

What you get inside BWT

After you verify ownership (meta tag, DNS CNAME record, XML file, or Domain Connect), the dashboard reports clicks, impressions, and average position, plus an index explorer, crawl stats, a robots.txt validator, sitemap status, and keyword research. From the same dashboard you can spin up a Microsoft Clarity project for heatmaps and session recordings, though you review that behavioral data in Clarity itself. For faster indexing you can push URLs through IndexNow, the ping protocol Bing co-founded with Yandex, so new or changed pages get crawled without waiting on a scheduled recrawl.

The 2026 addition worth watching is the AI Performance report, in public preview since February 2026. It shows how often your pages are cited as sources across Microsoft Copilot, AI-generated summaries in Bing, and select partner integrations. Metrics include Total Citations, Average Cited Pages, and Grounding Queries (the phrases the AI used to retrieve your content), plus citation counts per URL. A June 2026 update added Intents, Topics, Citation Share, and Compare. Microsoft frames it as an early step toward Generative Engine Optimization tooling.

Because Bing also powers DuckDuckGo and Yahoo web results and feeds Microsoft Copilot, the data in BWT reaches past Bing’s direct search share. Setup takes minutes, and you can import an existing Google Search Console verification to skip the DNS step.

How it affects your traffic

Most teams verify Google Search Console and never open Bing, so they miss a channel that also powers Copilot, DuckDuckGo, and Yahoo. BWT surfaces crawl errors, blocked resources, and index gaps that a Google-only view hides, and its AI Performance report is one of the few places you can see which of your pages AI systems actually cite. A technical SEO audit that reads both consoles catches those gaps early and turns Bing's citation data into a GEO roadmap. Our SEO Audit pulls Bing Webmaster Tools alongside Google data so nothing stays buried in the console you never checked.
