Business category

Also called: gbp category, primary category, secondary category, google business categories

A business category is a label you pick from Google's fixed list that tells Google Business Profile what your business is, so Google can match it to relevant searches. The primary category describes the business as a whole and is a top local-ranking lever; secondary categories cover additional services.

Primary vs secondary categories

Google gives you one primary category and lets you add more. The primary one carries the most weight: Google states plainly that “the categories you select affect your local ranking on Google.” It also maps a specific choice to broader ones behind the scenes, so picking Pizza restaurant can surface you for “Restaurants” and “Italian restaurants” too. You cannot invent a category; you choose from Google’s predefined list.

Pick the most specific option that fits. Google’s rule of thumb is to choose Nail salon instead of the generic Salon, and to select categories that complete the sentence “this business IS a,” not “this business HAS a.” Secondary categories exist for genuine extra services or departments, not a keyword dump. Google warns against selecting “a category for every product or service.”

Getting the primary wrong quietly caps you. A plumber filed under Contractor instead of Plumber gets matched to the wrong queries no matter how many reviews it has.

The leverage is measurable. A BrightLocal study of 1,050 locations found that profiles using four additional categories held the best average map ranking (5.9), versus 7.6 for profiles with none. More is not always better, but a tight, accurate set beats a lazy one.

How it affects your traffic

Your category set decides which local searches you are even eligible to show up for, so a mismatched primary category can keep you out of the map pack on your highest-intent queries while competitors with the correct tag take the calls. Auditing and correcting category selection (one accurate primary plus a small set of relevant secondaries) is usually one of the first and cheapest wins in a Local SEO engagement, and it compounds with reviews, proximity, and citations rather than competing with them. We treat it as a foundational check before spending on anything harder to move.
