cannibalization audit

Also called: keyword cannibalization audit, cannibalization check

A cannibalization audit is a review of a site that finds pages competing for the same keyword and search intent, then decides how to resolve them: consolidate, redirect, re-target, or leave alone. The goal is to concentrate ranking signals on one page instead of splitting them across several.

Cannibalization is often over-diagnosed, so a real audit separates true conflicts from pages that simply co-rank.

What the audit actually checks

Start in Google Search Console. Filter Performance by a query, then open the Pages view: if impressions and clicks for one term spread across several URLs, and the ranking URL keeps swapping week to week, that is the signal. A quick site:yourdomain.com "your keyword" search surfaces the same overlap fast.

The fix depends on why the pages overlap:

Google picks one canonical URL per group and consolidates link signals onto it, so splitting one topic across three weak pages means none inherits the full authority. That said, do not treat co-ranking as automatic damage. John Mueller said in 2025 that three of your pages showing in one result “doesn’t seem problematic to me just because it’s ‘more than 1.’” The problems an audit surfaces are usually thin content, blurred page focus, and weak internal linking, not the overlap itself. Fixing those is the point; deleting pages on reflex is not.

How it affects your traffic

When two or three pages trade places for your money keyword, you get the average of their strength instead of the sum: clicks leak, rankings wobble, and no single strong page ever forms. A cannibalization audit maps every URL to one target query, then consolidates, redirects, or re-angles the losers so signals stack on one page. Deciding which page to keep, which intent to protect, and what redirects where is judgment work, and that is exactly what an SEO Consulting engagement handles before a competitor with a cleaner keyword map takes the position.
