keyword mapping
Also called: keyword to url mapping, keyword map, keyword-to-page mapping
Keyword mapping is assigning each target keyword, or keyword cluster, to one specific page on your site so every query has a single owner. It stops two pages competing for the same term and exposes gaps where no page covers a query yet.
Start from a keyword list with search volume and intent, then add columns for the URL that should rank, the primary keyword, supporting terms, and the page title. The guiding principle is one dominant intent per URL: a page gets one primary keyword plus the secondary terms that share its intent, and a term with a different intent gets its own page (LearningSEO.io).
What the map buys you
The map does two jobs. It prevents keyword cannibalization, where several pages target the same query and serve the same purpose, so they harm each other’s rankings and Google cannot tell which one to rank (Semrush). And it surfaces content gaps, queries your audience searches that no page answers yet.
Example: a plumbing site with “emergency plumber,” “emergency plumber cost,” and “emergency plumber near me” should not spin up three near-identical pages. Map the core term to a service page, the cost query to a pricing guide, and the “near me” query to a location page. Each owns a distinct intent.
Before publishing anything new, check what already ranks with a quick site:yourdomain.com "keyword" search. If a strong page already targets that intent, expand it instead of shipping a rival. When two pages already overlap, Google’s own fix is to consolidate: merge them, 301 the weaker URL, or set a rel="canonical" so link signals collect on one preferred URL (Google Search Central).
How it affects your traffic
A messy keyword map is a common reason sites plateau: pages cannibalize each other so none reaches page one, and whole clusters of demand go uncovered. A clean map redistributes existing pages to distinct intents and lists the gaps worth building, which often lifts rankings without a single new link. Mapping keywords to URLs across a full site is judgment work, deciding what to merge, split, redirect, or write next, and that planning sits at the center of our SEO Consulting engagements.
