Geo-targeting
Also called: geotargeting, geographic targeting
Geo-targeting is serving different content, search results, or ads to people based on where they are (country, region, city, or a set radius). It lets a site or campaign show the right language, currency, and offers per market instead of one generic version for everyone.
Where it shows up
In organic SEO, Google decides which country and language a page serves from signals it reads: country-code domains (.de, .fr), hreflang annotations, server location, and on-page cues like local addresses, currency, and language. The old Search Console “International Targeting” country override was removed in 2022, so you no longer hand-pick a target country; you signal it and Google infers the rest. Google’s own caution: do not use IP analysis to swap content, because most crawls originate in the US and Googlebot will not vary its crawl location, so location-swapped pages can go uncrawled.
In paid search, Google Ads location targeting lets you pick countries, regions, cities, or a radius (minimum 1 km) and choose “presence” versus “presence or interest.” Detection leans on device and behavior signals, and Google states that 100% accuracy is not guaranteed.
One naming trap: this is not GEO (Generative Engine Optimization). Same three letters, unrelated ideas.
Example: a plumber serving three cities builds one indexable page per city with unique local content and consistent NAP, rather than one page that silently rewrites the city name by visitor IP. The first is crawlable and rankable; the second usually is not.
How it affects your traffic
Geo-targeting handled badly (IP redirects, cloaked locale pages, or one page that rewrites the city by visitor location) can hide your local pages from Googlebot and leak the wrong market into the results. Handled well, with clean hreflang, dedicated crawlable location pages, and consistent name, address, and phone, you capture "near me" and city-modified searches that convert. Our Local SEO work sets those signals so each location ranks in its own market instead of competing against itself.
