Cluster content
Also called: cluster pages, spoke content, content cluster pages, hub-and-spoke content
Cluster content is the set of focused subtopic pages that link up to a broad pillar page. Each one answers a specific question the pillar is too broad to cover, and the internal links between them tell search engines the pages all belong to one topic.
The model has three parts: one pillar page that frames a broad subject, several cluster pages that each go deep on a narrow slice of it, and the internal links that tie them together. HubSpot popularized this structure, building on its earlier “Topics Over Keywords” experiment, which found that adding internal links between related pages pushed those pages higher in results.
How a cluster page earns its place
A cluster page justifies itself by answering something the pillar cannot. If the pillar is “email marketing,” clusters cover “email subject line length,” “welcome email sequences,” “re-engagement campaigns,” and so on. Every cluster links back to the pillar, the pillar links out to every cluster, and the strongest clusters also link to each other.
Anchor text is where clusters do the real work. Google treats links as a relevance signal and rewards anchor text that is “descriptive, reasonably concise, and relevant.” A cluster linking up with email marketing guide tells crawlers what the pillar is about. A link that reads “click here” wastes the signal.
The practical test: every cluster page should be a short hop from its pillar, and the group should read as one coherent hub rather than scattered posts. Done right, the pillar accumulates authority from the pages beneath it, and each cluster page ranks for the specific long-tail query it owns.
How it affects your traffic
Clusters are how you turn a pile of blog posts into a topic a search engine can actually credit you for. Without shared focus and internal links, each page competes alone, and thin subtopic pages either get ignored or cannibalize the pillar for the same keyword. Mapping which page owns which query, writing the anchor text, and wiring the internal links is core on-page work. Our On-Page SEO service builds and connects the cluster so the pillar ranks and the spokes feed it.
