Content hub
Also called: hub and spoke, resource hub, hub and spoke model, content cluster, pillar page
A content hub is a central page that gives a broad overview of one topic and links out to a set of focused supporting pages, each of which links back. This hub-and-spoke structure signals to search engines that a site covers a subject in depth, which helps build topical authority.
How the hub and spoke fits together
A content hub has two page types doing two different jobs. The hub (also called a pillar page) covers a broad topic at overview depth and acts as the map. The spokes are supporting pages that each go deep on one subtopic and target more specific queries. Every spoke links up to the hub, the hub links down to its spokes, and related spokes link sideways to each other.
The model traces back to 2015, when HubSpot researchers Anum Hussain and Cambria Davies ran a “Topics Over Keywords” study and reported that the more internal links they added between related pages, the higher those pages tended to climb in results.
Google does not publish a “build topic clusters” rule, but its guidance lines up with the practice: content should give a complete description of a topic, every page you care about should have a link from at least one other page, and anchor text should describe what it points to. A hub satisfies all three at once. The same structure also helps generative engines like AI Overviews and ChatGPT map how your pages relate, so a tightly linked cluster is easier to cite than a pile of scattered one-off posts.
How it affects your traffic
A content hub only pays off if the on-page work underneath it is clean. Hubs and spokes need matched search intent, descriptive internal anchor text, and no thin or near-duplicate spokes fighting each other for the same query. Get those right and a single strong cluster can rank for a whole topic and route qualified traffic toward your money pages. That page-level layer (structure, internal links, and per-page targeting across the cluster) is exactly what our On-Page SEO service tightens.
