Duplicate listing
Also called: duplicate gbp, duplicate business listing, duplicate google business profile
A duplicate listing is a second Google Business Profile (or directory entry) for the same business at the same location. Google allows only one profile per business, so it hides duplicates from Search and Maps and splits your reviews and ranking signals across the profiles.
Why duplicates hurt local rankings
When two profiles point at the same business, Google cannot tell which one is authoritative. Its help docs list the triggers: an existing verified profile for the same business, the same address, or the same business set up on separate profiles offering different services. The consequence is blunt. Google says a duplicate “won’t show on Google Search or Maps.” So the extra listing does not sit there harmlessly, it can bury the profile you actually rely on.
The quieter damage is signal dilution. Reviews, photos, citations, and clicks that should stack on one profile get spread across two. Fewer reviews per listing and weaker engagement both feed the local ranking system. A dentist with 40 reviews on the real profile and 12 on a stray duplicate looks like two mediocre listings instead of one strong one.
Duplicates usually appear by accident: a franchise HQ and a location manager both create a profile, an agency sets one up without checking, or a move or rename spawns a fresh entry instead of editing the old one. Google’s fix is not delete and rebuild. It is report the duplicate on Maps for merging, claim the existing entry instead of making a new one, or ask support to resolve ownership. In practice Google will not merge two verified profiles, so the duplicate usually has to be unverified first, and a merge combines the reviews (though replies to those reviews can be lost).
How it affects your traffic
Duplicate profiles cap what any local SEO effort can achieve, because your strongest signals get split before ranking even starts. Cleaning them up is often the fastest local win: consolidate reviews onto one profile, remove the confusion, and let the surviving listing rank on its full history. Our Local SEO service audits your presence across Google, Bing, and Apple Maps plus the major citation sites, resolves duplicates the safe way (merge, not mass-delete), and keeps your name, address, and phone consistent so new duplicates do not reappear.
