people also ask
Also called: paa, people also ask box, related questions
People Also Ask (PAA) is an expandable Google search feature that shows a list of related questions. Clicking one reveals a short answer pulled from a web page, along with that page's title and link. The answers come from the same system that powers featured snippets.
When you search on Google, PAA usually appears as a middle-of-page block of three or four questions. Open one and it expands to a short answer lifted from a ranking page, then cascades in more related questions, so the list keeps growing as you interact. Answers show up as paragraphs, lists, tables, images, or video, whatever format best fits the question.
Who decides what shows
You cannot buy or force a PAA slot. Google’s own documentation is blunt about this: its systems “determine whether a page would make a good featured snippet,” and those snippets “can also appear within a related questions group (also known as ‘People Also Ask’).” Same machinery, same rules.
That means the levers are indirect. You can opt out with the nosnippet rule (blocks all snippets) or cap length with max-snippet, but there is no tag that opts you in. To earn placement, the content has to be there in a shape Google can lift: a clear question, then a tight 2-3 sentence answer, ideally under a matching heading.
There is a second payoff. Question-and-answer structure that wins PAA also gives AI answer engines (AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity) clean passages to quote. The same content discipline serves both surfaces, which is why we treat PAA research as entity and question mapping, not a one-off trick.
How it affects your traffic
Every PAA slot is a second or third way onto page one for a query you may already rank for, and each answer carries your link and page title. Because you cannot force placement, winning that real estate is a content-structure job: mapping the real questions around a topic, answering each in a tight 2-3 sentence block under a matching heading, and backing it with pages Google already trusts. Done well, one strong page can occupy several PAA questions plus its normal ranking, multiplying visibility without new backlinks. That question-mapping and prioritization is exactly what our SEO consulting engagements handle.
