serp feature

Also called: serp features, search features, serp elements, google search features

A SERP feature is any element on a Google results page beyond the standard ten organic blue-link listings, such as featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes, knowledge panels, image packs, and AI Overviews. Google documents the building blocks of its results page in a "Visual Elements gallery" and spells out which parts site owners can influence.

What counts as a SERP feature

Google’s Visual Elements gallery documents the building blocks of the results page. The classic text result (the plain blue link) is itself built from parts you can shape: the title link, the snippet, attribution (favicon, site name, URL), and byline date. Above and around those sit richer blocks: featured snippets pulled from a single page, People Also Ask accordions, knowledge panels drawn from the Knowledge Graph, image packs, video results, sitelinks, and, since 2024, AI Overviews.

Two things matter in practice. First, most features are earned, not bought. You cannot mark up a page to force a featured snippet; Google says its systems decide whether a page would make a good featured snippet based on how well it answers the query. Rich results (review stars, recipes, product listings) are the exception, since they are powered by structured data (schema.org JSON-LD) you add yourself. Not every markup type still earns a display feature, though: Google dropped FAQ and HowTo rich results, so that schema no longer produces a visual result in Search.

Second, features change where attention goes. Nielsen Norman Group found users scan results in a “pinball” pattern, bouncing between features instead of reading top to bottom, and often finish the task on the page itself without clicking through (what researchers call “good abandonment”).

So a #1 organic ranking can sit visually buried under an AI Overview, a snippet, and a PAA block. Tracking rank position alone misses this. You have to look at which features occupy a query and whether your page appears in them.

How it affects your traffic

Ranking well means little if a featured snippet or AI Overview answers the query before anyone reaches your listing. Winning SERP features is largely an on-page job: clean heading structure, a direct answer near the top, question-and-answer formatting, and correct structured data all raise the odds Google pulls your page into a snippet or rich result. Our On-Page SEO work targets exactly these signals, so your pages compete for the boxes and panels that actually capture clicks, not just a rank number users may scroll past.
