Geo-grid

Also called: geogrid, grid rank tracking, local grid, geo-grid rank tracking

A geo-grid is a local SEO rank-tracking method that lays a grid of points over a map, runs the same search from each point, and plots the business's local-pack position at every point as a color-coded heatmap. It shows how Google Maps rankings shift from block to block.

Why one number hides your real rankings

Traditional rank trackers check from a single location, usually your office or the city center. Google’s local results do not work that way. Google names distance (how far each business is from the searcher) as one of three local ranking factors, next to relevance and prominence. The same query returns a different map-pack order depending on where the searcher stands, so a plumber can sit at #2 outside the shop and drop to #18 four blocks away.

A geo-grid makes that spread visible. You pick a grid size (from 3x3 up to 21x21, with 9x9 a common default) and a radius between points, then the tool runs your keyword from every point and drops a pin colored by rank: green for top positions, yellow for mid, red for weak, gray for unranked. The result is a heatmap of where you win and where you leak.

Tools like Local Falcon, BrightLocal, and Whitespark roll the grid into single metrics. ARP (Average Rank Position) and SoLV (Share of Local Voice) let you track one figure over time and compare against competitors on the same map. Newer grids also report AI-search visibility (ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews) from the same points, so local presence and AI presence sit side by side.

How it affects your traffic

A geo-grid turns a fuzzy "are we ranking?" into a map that shows exactly which neighborhoods send you calls and which ones a competitor owns. That spatial data drives the work that moves the map: Google Business Profile optimization, review velocity, local citations, and location-page content aimed at the weak (red) zones. Our Local SEO service uses geo-grid scans as the before-and-after scorecard, so ranking gains show up as green spreading across the grid instead of a single line on a chart.
