Google Maps spam
Also called: listing spam, gbp spam, fake listings
Google Maps spam is any tactic that manipulates local rankings or misleads users through fake, duplicate, or misrepresented Business Profiles, such as keyword-stuffed business names, fake or virtual addresses, and fake reviews. Google's guidelines prohibit it and can suspend or remove offending listings.
Google Maps spam covers a range of manipulation tactics, and Google’s Business Profile guidelines name most of them directly. The most common is stuffing keywords into the business name. A plumber legitimately called “Rivera Plumbing” who lists as “Rivera Plumbing Best Emergency Plumber Chicago” is spamming, because the name no longer matches real-world signage. Google’s policy is explicit: including unnecessary information in your name “could result in the suspension of your Business Profile.”
Common Maps spam tactics
- Keyword-stuffed business names
- Fake or lead-generation listings that impersonate a real company and reroute calls
- PO boxes or virtual offices posing as a staffed storefront
- Duplicate listings for one location to occupy more map space
- Fake or gated reviews to inflate the star rating
Scale matters here. Google says it removed or blocked roughly 12 million fake business profiles in 2023, and in a 2025 action it sued a network behind more than 10,000 fake Maps listings.
Enforcement is uneven, though. A Sterling Sky study of 50 keyword-spam cases found Google issued only a warning about 60% of the time, and every warned business re-added the keywords after being caught. One listing got its keywords back as many as eight times without any action. That is why reporting still matters: use “Suggest an edit” for small fixes or the Business Redressal form for clear fraud, and keep your own profile clean so a rule-breaking competitor does not out-rank you.
How it affects your traffic
In the local pack, spam competitors can push a compliant business off the three visible results, which is where most near-me clicks and calls go. If a competitor is winning with a keyword-stuffed name or a fake address, you are losing bookings to a listing Google could remove tomorrow. A Local SEO engagement audits your category, name, address, and citations for compliance, builds the legitimate ranking signals (reviews, proximity relevance, consistent NAP), and files redressal reports against the spam beating you. Clean listings that survive enforcement compound; spam that gets suspended resets to zero.
