Google’s spam policy lists three telltale patterns: lists of phone numbers with no added value, blocks of text naming the cities and regions a page wants to rank for (SEO agency Madrid, SEO agency Barcelona, SEO agency Valencia...), and repeating the same phrase so often it reads unnaturally. The tactic is a holdover from an era when rankings leaned on raw term frequency. That era is over.

Why it backfires now

Modern retrieval works on meaning, not counting. Google’s systems can rank a page for queries that never literally appear in the text, which makes any fixed “keyword density” target pointless. Ahrefs puts it plainly: chasing a density percentage is unnecessary because the algorithm reads for quality and intent, not repetition.

Two things go wrong when you stuff. First, algorithmic systems can treat the page as low quality and quietly rank it down, with no notification. Second, Google’s webspam team can apply a manual action after human review, which can push a page out of results altogether. Google says it detects violations “both through automated systems and, as needed, human review.”

Avoid it by writing for a reader. Put the primary term where it belongs (title, H1, opening line), then use synonyms and natural variations instead of hammering one phrase. If a sentence exists only to hold a keyword, cut it.
