A link farm is a group of websites built mainly to link to each other (or to a target site) so they inflate search rankings instead of serving real readers. Google classifies these links as link spam and can devalue or penalize every site in the network.
Link farms date back to 1999, when SEOs exploited the Inktomi engine’s reliance on link popularity, then adapted the tactic to Google’s PageRank once it became the dominant ranking signal (per Wikipedia). The mechanics are simple: spin up dozens or hundreds of low-value sites, then cross-link them so each page inherits “authority” it never earned editorially.
How Google sees it
Google’s spam policies define link spam as “the practice of creating links to or from a site primarily for the purpose of manipulating search rankings.” The listed violations map straight onto link-farm behavior: “excessive link exchanges,” “using automated programs or services to create links,” and “low-quality directory or bookmark site links.” A link farm is that pattern run at scale.
Typical fingerprints: thin or duplicated content, a high outbound-to-inbound link ratio, no named editorial team, and clusters of sites sharing IPs or footprints. A link farm differs from a private blog network (PBN) mainly in direction. As Ahrefs puts it, “PBNs are built to send link juice to a website outside of the PBN, while websites within a link farm only link to each other.”
The risk is not just wasted budget. Ahrefs notes Google “can penalize not just the sites within the link farm but also the websites the link farm is linking to.” One bad supplier can pull your domain into a manual action or algorithmic devaluation.
