A private blog network (PBN) is a group of websites, usually built on expired domains that still carry backlink authority, that one owner controls to plant links pointing at a "money site" and inflate its rankings. Google treats PBNs as a link scheme that violates its spam policies.
How PBNs work and why they stopped working
Someone buys expired or auctioned domains that still carry links and authority from their previous life, spins up thin blogs on them, then points those blogs at the site they actually want to rank. The network exists to pass link equity in one direction, which is the exact pattern Google’s spam policies name as a link scheme: creating links “primarily for the purpose of manipulating search rankings.”
The economics broke. Google’s December 2022 link spam update trained SpamBrain to spot both sites that buy manipulative links and sites built to pass them, then neutralize those links so no ranking credit flows. Networks also leave footprints: shared hosting and IP ranges, reused analytics IDs, matching registrant data, and sites that link to each other but almost nowhere else. Google’s separate expired domain abuse policy targets repurposing old domains for content that games rankings.
The downside is asymmetric. A PBN can carry a site for a while, then one algorithmic pass can strip every link at once, and a manual action can deindex the money site entirely.
Example: a local firm buys five expired domains, parks them on one cheap server, and links all five to its homepage with the same anchor text. That footprint is trivial for SpamBrain, and for a human reviewer, to connect. The site gets a short bump, then the links get discounted or the money site gets flagged, and the spend is gone.
