Local link building is the practice of earning backlinks from geographically relevant sites, like local news outlets, chambers of commerce, and nearby businesses, to strengthen a business's authority in a specific area. Google treats these links as part of the prominence signal used to rank local and map-pack results.
Why local links carry extra weight
General link building chases authority from any relevant site. Local link building narrows the aim to sources tied to your city or region, because Google’s local ranking leans on prominence, and prominence is based partly on “how many websites link to your business” (Google Business Profile Help). A link from the regional paper, the Chamber of Commerce, a supplier’s “where to buy” page, or a sponsored youth team signals that you are a real, established part of that area in a way a generic guest post cannot.
The tactics are relationship-driven, not technical: sponsor a local event, join business associations that list their members, get quoted in local press, partner with complementary nearby businesses, and reclaim unlinked brand mentions. The bar is editorial quality over raw volume (Semrush).
Two on-page rules matter as much here as the link itself. Keep anchor text descriptive and natural (Google flags keyword-stuffed anchors as a spam-policy violation), and make sure the link is a crawlable <a href> element, since links in script events or bare images may not be parsed at all. A handful of trusted local links usually moves the map pack more than a hundred scraped directory listings, so effort is better spent on a few strong, genuinely local sources than on bulk submissions.
