Local rank tracking
Also called: local rank tracker, local SEO rank tracker, geo-grid rank tracking
Local rank tracking is monitoring where a business ranks in localized search results (the map pack, local finder, and organic listings) for target keywords, measured from specific geographic points, since local results shift with the searcher's location.
Because Google factors the searcher’s physical location into local results, one national “average position” number hides the truth. The same query can put you at the top of the map pack for someone near your storefront and off the results entirely a few blocks away. Local rank tracking exists to measure that variation.
Google’s own guidance says local results rank on relevance, distance, and prominence, and that when a searcher does not share their location, “Google uses what it knows about their location.” Distance is baked into the algorithm, so position is partly a function of where the query is asked.
Tools reproduce this by encoding coordinates into the request. Google’s UULE parameter tells the engine to treat a query as if it came from an exact latitude and longitude. Run that across a grid of points (a 5x5 or 13x13 matrix over a service area) and you get a visibility heatmap instead of a single number.
What good tracking measures
- Position in the local pack and local finder, not just classic organic
- Rankings across many grid points, so you see the radius where you actually win
- Trend over time, to tie movement to profile edits, reviews, and new content
Example: a plumber ranks first within 2km of the shop and disappears at 6km. That gap tells you exactly where to concentrate citations, service-area pages, and review generation to widen the winning zone.
How it affects your traffic
If you only watch a single averaged rank, you miss the map-pack blind spots that quietly cost you calls. Grid-based local rank tracking shows the exact neighborhoods where competitors outrank you, which turns vague "improve local rankings" work into a targeted list: where to add reviews, citations, and location pages. Our Local SEO work uses this location-level data to grow the green zone on your heatmap, so more nearby searchers see you first and pick up the phone.
