Local search
Also called: local search results, local search query
Local search is any query where the intent is to find a nearby business or place, like "plumber near me" or "coffee shop." Google answers it with a location-aware layout (a map plus a small pack of business listings) ranked mainly by relevance, distance, and prominence rather than classic web signals alone.
Local search covers queries where intent is geographic: the searcher wants a business, service, or place they can reach, not a general web page. Google reads that intent (from wording like “near me,” or from the searcher’s own location) and swaps in a location-aware results layout. The most visible piece is the local pack (also called the map pack or 3-pack): a map plus a short set of business listings, usually three, pulled from Google Business Profiles and sitting above the standard blue links.
What ranks in local search
Google’s own guidance names three factors: relevance (how well a Business Profile matches the query), distance (how far each business is from the searcher), and prominence (how well-known the business is, including reviews and links). Google says it weighs all three together to find the best match, so distance alone does not decide the order. A more relevant, more prominent business slightly farther away can still surface above a closer, weaker one. Google is also explicit that there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking.
Two things follow for anyone doing this in practice. Your Google Business Profile is a ranking surface, not just a directory entry, so category, hours, and reviews do real work. And because listings are customized to the searcher’s location, the same keyword returns different results for two people in different spots, which means local rank is measured across a grid of points, not as one national number.
How it affects your traffic
A large share of the clicks for "near me" and city-plus-service queries goes to the businesses inside the local pack, so if you are not in it, standard organic rankings only capture the leftover traffic. Winning that space is a different discipline from page-level SEO: it runs on Google Business Profile optimization, review signals, citation consistency, and location pages, which is what our Local SEO service builds and maintains. Because results shift with the searcher's position, we track rank across a geo-grid instead of trusting a single position, then close the gaps that keep you out of the pack in your core service areas.
