Neural matching
Also called: neural matching algorithm, Google neural matching
Neural matching is an AI system Google uses to match the concepts behind a search query to the concepts inside web pages, instead of relying on exact keyword overlap. Google introduced it to Search in 2018, using neural embeddings to compare fuzzy meaning to fuzzy meaning.
From keywords to concepts
Traditional retrieval matched the words in your query against the words on a page. Neural matching adds a layer on top: Google turns both the query and the document into “fuzzy” numeric representations (neural embeddings) of their underlying meaning, then compares meaning to meaning. That is why a page can rank for a search that shares almost none of its exact words.
Google’s Danny Sullivan described it as a “super synonym system.” His example: someone searching why does my TV look strange can be served pages about the “soap opera effect,” even though those pages never use that phrase. Google said in 2018 that neural matching touched roughly 30% of queries. Its own documentation now lists it as a standard part of ranking, alongside RankBrain and BERT.
Those three often get confused. RankBrain helps Google relate pages to concepts, BERT parses how word combinations shift meaning, and neural matching connects the words in a query to the broader concept behind it. You cannot target any of them directly. Google’s repeated guidance is plain: write genuinely useful content that covers a topic and its related concepts, not a page that repeats one keyword. The practical shift is from optimizing strings to optimizing for the idea a searcher actually has in mind.
How it affects your traffic
Neural matching means exact-match keyword stuffing no longer wins; Google rewards pages that cover a concept and its related ideas thoroughly. If your pages target one phrase at a time, you likely miss the wider cluster of queries that map to the same concept. Our SEO consulting maps your topics to the concepts real searchers use, so a single strong page earns traffic across dozens of related queries instead of just one. That is where semantic depth turns into rankings you can measure.
