In Ahrefs, the parent topic is the broader keyword that sends the most search traffic to the page currently ranking #1 for your target keyword. It signals whether you can cover a wider topic on one page instead of building a separate page for the narrow variant.
How Ahrefs calculates it
Ahrefs takes the #1 ranking page for your keyword, then finds the single query driving the most organic traffic to that page. That query becomes the parent topic. If your keyword and its parent match, Google likely treats your term as its own topic. If they differ, Google is treating your keyword as a subtopic of something bigger.
Example: how to remove coffee stains might return a parent topic of how to get coffee stains out. The top page ranks for both, so one strong page can win the cluster instead of two thin pages competing.
Two caveats matter. First, parent topic is a heuristic, not a rule. It reads the current SERP, so it inherits whatever Google rewards today, and Ahrefs notes that “only keywords that have regularly updated SERPs will have Parent topic data.” Second, a shared parent does not guarantee shared intent. cheap running shoes and best running shoes can roll up to one parent yet serve buyers at different stages, so check the actual results before you consolidate.
