performance report
Also called: search console performance report, gsc performance report
The Performance report in Google Search Console shows how a site performs in Google Search using four metrics: clicks, impressions, click-through rate (CTR), and average position. You can break these down by query, page, country, device, search appearance, and date.
What each metric means
Google keeps the four metrics simple. A click counts when someone clicks a link from Google to your site, and it only counts if the click leads out of Google Search. An impression counts each time a link to your site appears in results. CTR is clicks divided by impressions. Average position is the topmost position your site occupied for a query, averaged across the queries where it appeared.
The report measures pre-visit behavior: what happens on the search results page, not what people do after they land. That is the line between Search Console and Google Analytics, which tracks on-site activity.
You filter by search type (web, image, video, news) and slice the data by six dimensions: query, page, country, device, search appearance, and date. Compare two date ranges to see movement. Since December 2024 the report also offers a 24-hour view with hourly data, so you can watch a new page or a fresh story pick up traffic within the day.
A practical read: sort pages by impressions, then scan CTR. A page with high impressions and low CTR is ranking but not earning the click, usually a title or meta description problem. A page whose average position slipped from 4 to 9 lost the visibility, not the appeal. Each pattern points to a different fix.
How it affects your traffic
The Performance report is where most SEO problems first show up as numbers: a page bleeding clicks, a query where you rank on page two, a CTR far below the queries around it. Reading it well is the difference between guessing at fixes and knowing which pages actually lost traffic and why. Our SEO Audit starts here, pulling your clicks, impressions, CTR, and position data to find the pages worth fixing first and the ranking or CTR gaps costing you the most sessions.
