A reciprocal link is a mutual exchange where two sites agree to link to each other ("you link me, I link you"). Google's spam policies treat excessive link exchanges made mainly to manipulate rankings as link spam, though mutual links that occur naturally between related sites are normal.
When mutual links cross the line
Google’s spam policies name “Excessive link exchanges (‘Link to me and I’ll link to you’) or partner pages exclusively for the sake of cross-linking” as a form of link spam. The signal Google reads is intent and scale, not the mere fact that a link points both ways. Two sites in the same niche will always share some links because they cite each other’s best work, and that overlap is common. Ahrefs data cited by Backlinko found roughly three quarters of domains carry reciprocal links in their profiles, so a single mutual link is not a red flag.
The problem starts when the exchange is coordinated, high-volume, and built for rankings rather than readers. Dedicated “links” or “partners” pages stuffed with swaps, ABC (triangular) schemes routed through a third site to hide the pattern, and keyword-rich anchors traded at scale all read as manipulation. Google can map backlink relationships and spot the symmetry.
If you do link out, keep it editorial: link because the page genuinely helps your reader, from relevant context, with natural anchor text. Sponsored or negotiated placements should carry rel="sponsored" or rel="nofollow" so they do not pass ranking signals. A reciprocal link is not automatically toxic.
