Keywords & SERP

related keywords

Also called: related search terms, related terms

Related keywords are words and phrases semantically or contextually tied to a seed keyword, such as synonyms, subtopics, and adjacent queries people search alongside it. Search engines use these associations to understand a page's meaning and to match content to queries that never contain the exact target term.

Related keywords come in two practical flavors. The first is surfaced by search engines: the Related searches block, autocomplete, and “People also search for” clusters. Google describes a related searches group as “a cluster of related searches that other people have done,” automatically generated from the initial query and what others search for, and it tells site owners to watch them when planning topics to write about.

The second flavor comes from keyword tools that group terms by shared meaning or shared SERP results. Ahrefs draws a useful line: the related keywords worth targeting are usually subtopics, not near-duplicate phrasings of the same term.

How search engines use them

Google’s synonym system and language models let a page rank for queries that never contain your exact wording. Its own example is matching a page that says “adjust laptop brightness” to a search for change laptop brightness. So covering the concepts around a term, not just the string itself, widens the set of queries one page can rank for.

The practical move is not stuffing variants into a page. It is mapping the subtopics and entities a full answer should include, then organizing them by search intent. In AI search, the same associations help language models connect your page to a topic even when a prompt is phrased loosely, which is part of how you earn a citation instead of just a blue link.

How it affects your traffic

Building content around related keywords is how a single page earns traffic from dozens or hundreds of query variations instead of one exact phrase, which is where most compounding organic growth actually comes from. Miss the related subtopics and Google reads the page as narrow, so it ranks below competitors that cover the topic fully. Mapping the right related terms to each page, without cannibalizing your own URLs, is a core part of the topic architecture work we do in SEO Consulting.
