Review signals
Also called: review ranking signals, google review signals
Review signals are the review-related inputs Google uses to judge a local business's prominence: total review count, average star rating, review recency and velocity, the words reviewers use, and coverage across platforms. Stronger review signals help a business rank in the local pack and on Maps.
What Google actually counts
Google keeps its official line plain: local results run on relevance, distance, and prominence, and reviews feed prominence. The Business Profile help page says “more reviews and positive ratings can help your business’s local ranking,” and that prominence is partly based on “how many reviews you have.” Google stops there, so the detail comes from studying real result sets.
Practitioners split review signals into moving parts:
- Count: total review volume.
- Rating: average star score.
- Velocity: how steadily new reviews arrive. A shop earning two a week reads healthier than one that got 40 in a burst, then went quiet.
- Recency: fresh reviews outweigh old ones.
- Content relevance: reviews that name the service (
emergency root canal) help match those queries. - Diversity: presence on Google plus Yelp, Facebook, and industry sites.
Whitespark’s 2026 survey puts review signals near 20% of local pack weight, with review recency climbing to a top factor. A Search Atlas analysis of 3,269 businesses found that in the top ten positions, review count (26%) and review keyword relevance (22%) together outweighed proximity (36%). In a tight local race, reviews are often the lever that moves a listing from position 8 to position 1.
How it affects your traffic
In the local pack, review signals are one of the few ranking inputs you can steadily move, and they map straight to calls and store visits. If your rating, review count, and review velocity trail the three listings above you in the map pack, you lose the clicks that concentrate in those top spots. Our Local SEO service builds a review-generation cadence, an owner-response workflow, and platform coverage so the prominence signal keeps compounding instead of stalling.
