search demand
Also called: search demand curve, keyword demand, search interest
Search demand is the total volume of searches people make for a topic over a given period and place. Plotted by volume it forms the search demand curve: a few high-volume "head" terms, then a long "tail" of many low-volume queries that together often outweigh the head.
Search demand is not spread evenly across queries. Plotting its US keyword database, Ahrefs found just under 18,000 keywords pull more than 100,000 searches a month, while roughly 2.3 billion terms (about 93% of that database) get fewer than ten. That shape is the demand curve.
Head, torso, and tail
A short, tall head holds broad terms like running shoes. A mid torso sits below it. Then a long tail of specific queries like trail running shoes for flat feet each barely register, yet added together they hold most of the searches. Two things follow.
First, the tail is set by search volume, not word count. A one-word term with 40 searches a month is still tail, and Ahrefs is explicit that there is no fixed threshold: it depends on the head term you compare it against.
Second, the numbers in any keyword tool are estimates. Google Trends, the closest primary demand signal, reports interest as a normalized 0 to 100 index built from a sample of searches, not raw counts, and cautions it “is not a scientific poll.” Read a single volume figure as a direction, not a fact.
Demand also shifts. Seasonality, news cycles, and AI assistants that answer before a click all change where real demand sits and how much of it reaches your page.
How it affects your traffic
Mapping the demand curve for your market is where SEO strategy starts. It tells you which head terms are worth fighting for, which tail clusters actually convert, and where demand is drifting into AI answers you can still be cited in. Read the curve wrong and you burn budget on head terms you cannot rank for while a competitor quietly owns the buying tail. SEOBRO's SEO consulting builds that demand map first, then a plan to capture the slices you can realistically win, in classic search and in AI results.
