SEO monitoring is the ongoing tracking of a site's search performance (rankings, organic traffic, indexing, technical health, backlinks, and visibility in AI answers) so changes and problems get caught early rather than weeks later. - Indexing and crawl errors, so pages do not silently drop out
- Core Web Vitals, measured on real-world field data
- New and lost backlinks
- Visibility in AI answers
That last one is newer. As of 2026, Google counts AI Overviews and AI Mode appearances inside the overall Performance report, and it has begun rolling out dedicated generative-AI reports showing impressions in those features (clicks and query data are not broken out yet).
The point is early detection. A dropped canonical, a noindex shipped by accident, or a Core Web Vitals regression after a redesign can cost weeks of traffic if nobody is watching.
