three-way link exchange
Also called: ABC link exchange, ABC linking, 3-way link exchange, ABC link swap
A three-way link exchange (ABC linking) is a link scheme where three sites trade links in a loop: Site A links to Site B, Site B links to Site C, and Site C links back to Site A. The detour through a third site hides the reciprocity a direct A-to-B, B-to-A swap would expose.
A direct swap (A links to B, B links back to A) is easy for Google to spot: the two domains point straight at each other. Routing through a third site breaks that symmetry, so the reciprocity is not visible in any single pair of pages.
Hiding one signal is not hiding all of them
Google’s spam policies still name this behavior. “Excessive link exchanges” and “partner pages exclusively for the sake of cross-linking” are listed as link spam, and the policy targets the intent to pass ranking signals, not the number of hops in the loop. The detour does not make the scheme compliant, it just makes the reciprocity harder to see in isolation.
The catch is that one hidden signal leaves the rest exposed. Ahrefs found reciprocal links on 73.6% of the 140,592 domains it studied, so mutual linking is ordinary and not penalized on its own. What draws scrutiny is a coordinated footprint: previously unrelated domains linking in a ring, near-identical anchor text, and clustered timing. Those are the fingerprints an ABC ring leaves even when no single page pair looks reciprocal.
If a link exists for advertising or sponsorship reasons, Google’s guidance is to qualify it with rel="nofollow" or rel="sponsored" so it passes no ranking credit. A followed link placed only to move position is the part that breaks policy.
How it affects your traffic
Chasing three-way exchanges to inflate a backlink count is a fragile way to move rankings: the links can be quietly devalued or flagged in a link spam action, and the cleanup (disavows, outreach to remove links) costs more than the rankings were worth. Earned links from real relationships and content tend to survive core updates instead of getting reset by them. Our Link Building work targets editorially placed, topically relevant links rather than reciprocal loops, so the authority you build holds instead of evaporating in the next audit.
