universal search
Also called: blended search, blended results
Universal search (also called blended search) is Google's practice, introduced in 2007, of mixing results from several verticals such as images, video, news, and maps into one organic results page instead of showing only ten text links.
Before May 2007, a Google results page was ten blue links, and you reached images or news through separate tabs. Universal search merged those indexes into the main page. Google described the shift plainly: results now blend video, news, images, maps, and books into the same page, positioned wherever Google decides they are most relevant.
How blended results change the SERP
The mechanics matter for planning. Google scores each vertical on its own signals (freshness weighs heavily for News, links and relevance for web pages, metadata for Images), then decides whether a vertical result outranks a plain web listing. A query like how to tie a tie may surface a video block above the text results, pizza near me triggers a local/map pack, and a breaking topic pulls in a Top Stories unit.
This reframes the ranking question. A page can be technically strong and still lose the top of the SERP to a video, an image pack, or a local result. Optimizing only HTML text leaves those slots to competitors. To win them you feed the matching vertical: image and video sitemaps, News eligibility, structured data, and a maintained Google Business Profile.
In 2026 Google rarely uses the label “universal search,” but the mechanic is now the default. The results page is a stack of web links, SERP features, rich results, and AI Overviews layered on top. Each blended element is a separate entry point you can compete for, which is why visibility is better measured across features than by a single position.
How it affects your traffic
Because one query can return web links plus a video block, an image pack, and a local unit, your total visibility depends on how many of those blended slots you occupy, not just your text ranking. Chasing a single blue link while ignoring images, video, News, and maps hands easy clicks to competitors who fill them. An SEO Consulting engagement audits which verticals each of your target queries triggers, then prioritizes the vertical assets (sitemaps, schema, media, GBP) that actually earn those slots.
