web 2.0 backlinks
Also called: web 2.0 links
Web 2.0 backlinks are links you place yourself on free publishing platforms like WordPress.com, Blogger, Tumblr, or Medium, where you create a page on the host's subdomain that links back to your site. Because you control them, they are self-made links, not independent editorial votes.
You create the account, the page, and the anchor text, so a web 2.0 link is self-published, not an outside endorsement. That is why the tactic sits close to Google’s line.
Why Google treats them cautiously
Google’s spam policies name patterns these campaigns tend to trip, including “using automated programs or services to create links to your site” and “creating low-value content primarily for the purposes of manipulating linking and ranking signals.” A 2017 Search Central reminder adds that stuffing keyword-rich links into articles published across many different sites is an indicator of a link scheme, and says to mark links of questionable intent with rel="nofollow".
That does not make every property toxic. A real Medium or WordPress.com blog with original, useful posts that happens to link to you is a different thing from a network of thin, spun pages built only to pass link equity. The line is intent and quality, not the platform itself. In practice, mass-produced web 2.0 links created only to move “link juice” have lost most of their weight, while a genuinely maintained property can still add some topical relevance and profile diversity.
So treat web 2.0 as supporting assets, not a core plan: a few active blogs with unique content and branded or natural anchors, not fifty abandoned subdomains stuffed with exact-match anchor text. Publish gradually, keep the pages real, and do not rely on them to do the heavy lifting on competitive terms.
How it affects your traffic
If your profile leans on cheap, mass-produced web 2.0 links, you tend to get little ranking lift and real downside: Google can ignore them or read the pattern as manipulation. Editorial links from independent sites are what move rankings; self-published subdomain links rarely do on their own. Our Link Building work targets earned, relevant placements over volume, so the links pointing at you actually count toward the traffic you are trying to win.
