Wikidata

Wikidata is a free, collaboratively edited knowledge base of structured, machine-readable facts about entities (people, brands, places, things), each identified by a unique Q-number like Q42. Released under a CC0 public-domain license, it is one of the open sources that feed Google's Knowledge Graph.

Wikidata organizes everything as items, each with a unique Q-number (Q42 is the writer Douglas Adams), described by properties (P-numbers) and statements that pair a property with a value. That structure is the whole point: where Wikipedia writes prose for people, Wikidata stores facts for machines, and each statement can carry a source and links to external database IDs.

Its reach into search comes from history. Google’s Knowledge Graph originally leaned on Freebase, the entity database Google had acquired in 2010. When Google retired Freebase (it went read-only in 2015), it directed its resources to Wikidata and helped hand the dataset to the volunteer community, mapping millions of topics into Wikidata items. The Knowledge Graph now draws on Wikidata as a key open source, and because the data is CC0 and machine-readable, it gets reused well beyond Google, across other search engines and AI systems.

Claiming your entity

For a brand, the practical move is to have a well-sourced Wikidata item, then reference its Q-ID in your site’s schema.org markup through the sameAs property. That makes a direct, machine-readable link between your website and your Knowledge Graph entity, alongside your social profiles and any Wikipedia page. Consistency matters: search and AI systems cross-reference your name, description, and identifiers across many sources, so conflicting facts weaken the entity instead of reinforcing it.

How it affects your traffic

Entity clarity is now a visibility lever, not a vanity project. A verified, consistent Wikidata item makes it easier for Google to show a Knowledge Panel for your brand and for AI answers to describe you correctly instead of conflating you with someone else. Our AI SEO work builds that entity foundation (a sourced Wikidata presence, matching schema with sameAs, and consistent signals across the web) so machines cite the right facts about you. Skip it and AI tools fill the gap with whatever they can scrape, which is often outdated or a competitor.
