Freebase
Freebase was a large, community-built knowledge base of structured facts about entities (people, places, things), launched by Metaweb in 2007 and acquired by Google in 2010. Its data helped seed Google's Knowledge Graph. Google shut Freebase down in 2016 and moved the data toward Wikidata.
From community wiki to the Knowledge Graph
Freebase worked like a structured wiki. Instead of prose, contributors entered typed facts (an entity, a property, a value), so a topic like “Barcelona” carried machine-readable attributes (country, population, mayor) rather than paragraphs. Metaweb Technologies ran it publicly from March 2007, Google bought Metaweb in July 2010, and Freebase became one of the seed sources (alongside Wikipedia) for the Knowledge Graph that launched in 2012. By January 2014 it held roughly 44 million topics and 2.4 billion facts.
Google announced the shutdown on December 16, 2014. Freebase went read-only on March 31, 2015, the Knowledge Graph Search API arrived as the developer replacement, and freebase.com closed on May 2, 2016. The data did not vanish: Google published Freebase-to-Wikidata mappings and still hosts the final dumps for research. Wikidata is now the living, open successor.
Why it still matters in 2026: Freebase is the origin story of entity-based search. The idea it proved, that engines reason over things and not just strings, is exactly what powers today’s Knowledge Panels and AI answers. You cannot edit Freebase, but you can influence its descendants. A clean Wikidata item, consistent structured data, and corroborating references are how an engine (or an LLM) resolves your brand to a confident entity.
How it affects your traffic
For AI search, being a resolved entity is the whole game. AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Perplexity lean on the Knowledge Graph and Wikidata lineage that Freebase started to decide which brands are real and citable. If your business reads as a fuzzy string instead of a confident entity, you get left out of the answer even when your pages rank. Our AI SEO work builds that entity foundation (Wikidata presence, Organization schema, sameAs links, consistent NAP) so engines and LLMs cite you by name.
