zombie pages
Also called: zombie urls, dead pages
Zombie pages are indexed URLs that get little or no organic traffic and add no real value, such as thin, duplicate, or outdated pages. In bulk they waste crawl budget and can drag down a site's overall quality signals, which is why SEOs prune or consolidate them.
Where they come from
Sites accumulate zombie pages over time, and e-commerce catalogs accumulate them fastest. Faceted navigation and filters (?color=red&size=m), expired or out-of-stock products, paginated archives, tag pages, and old promo URLs all spin up indexable pages that nobody searches for. Individually harmless, in bulk they bloat the index and eat crawl budget.
The bigger risk is site-wide. Google’s helpful content guidance states that content on sites carrying relatively high amounts of unhelpful content is less likely to perform well, and that removing that content can help the rest rank. So a few thousand dead filter URLs are not neutral dead weight. They can weigh on your product and category pages too.
Finding them is a data exercise: cross-reference Google Search Console (URLs with zero clicks and near-zero impressions over 6 to 12 months) against a full crawl and your analytics. For each candidate, pick one of three fixes:
- Improve and keep it if the topic has real search demand.
- Consolidate with a
301redirect into a stronger page. - Remove it with a
410(ornoindexif users still need it live) when it serves nobody.
One caveat: “zombie page” is an SEO-community label, not a term Google uses. What Google actually measures is helpfulness and value. That is exactly what you are restoring when you clean these up.
How it affects your traffic
E-commerce sites generate zombie pages faster than any other type, through faceted URLs, expired SKUs, and thin tag or filter pages, so index bloat is usually the first thing an audit surfaces. Left alone, it wastes crawl budget on junk and drags on the site-wide quality signal that decides whether your money pages (categories and products) rank. Cleaning it up recovers crawl efficiency and concentrates authority on the pages that actually convert. Our E-commerce SEO work includes this kind of index pruning and consolidation.
