faq rich result
Also called: faq snippet, faq schema result, faqpage rich result
A FAQ rich result was an expandable list of question-and-answer pairs Google showed beneath a search result, generated from FAQPage structured data. Google restricted it to government and health sites in 2023 and stopped showing it in Search entirely on May 7, 2026.
From SERP feature to dead markup
For a few years, a page with FAQPage schema (@type: "FAQPage") could earn an expandable Q&A panel under its blue link. That extra space pushed competitors down the page and pulled in more clicks. In August 2023 Google narrowed eligibility to well-known, authoritative government and health websites, so most sites lost the feature. Then on May 7, 2026, Google removed it completely. No site, however authoritative, earns a FAQ rich result in Search today, and Google plans to drop reporting and API support for it by August 2026.
The markup itself is still valid. Google’s documentation says you do not need to remove FAQPage data, and the removal is a search-appearance change, not a ranking signal, so keeping or dropping it does not move your positions. What changed is the payoff: the same Q&A content no longer buys a bigger listing on the results page.
The demand behind FAQs did not disappear, it moved. People still ask questions, but the answers now surface inside AI Overviews, People Also Ask boxes, and assistants like ChatGPT and Perplexity. Clean question-and-answer content is still one of the easiest formats for those systems to lift and quote, so the writing is worth keeping. Just stop treating the FAQ rich result as a live tactic, because it does not exist anymore.
How it affects your traffic
If you added FAQ schema to chase rich results, that tactic stopped returning anything in May 2026, and any agency still selling it is selling a feature Google turned off. The upside is that the cleanup is simple: keep FAQPage markup only where it powers an on-page accordion, stop optimizing for the panel, and route that Q&A content toward AI answers and People Also Ask instead. Sorting live tactics from dead ones like this is exactly the work in our SEO Consulting engagements, so your team stops maintaining markup for a SERP feature that no longer fires and spends budget on surfaces that still send traffic.
